Bird Watching, Common Alder Trees and Capture the Flag
Yesterday I went to Delamere Forest again with my EO group. We were told that we were to climb this hill called 'Old Pale' next to the forest and along the way, we had to answer questions. We were split up into groups, (from now on I shall name everyone I mention to avoid confusion, I just hope they don't attack me for saying their names on the internet! >.<) here they are:
People that are in my Education Otherwise (home schooled) group: (in order of age and family)
Maddy, (goes to school)
Nico,
Hannah,
Rebecca,
Elizabeth,
Amelia,
Olivia,
Robyn,
Joe,
Danny,
Tamara,
Talisa,
Talana,
Tameka,
Tyler,
Tate,
Jacob,
Me,
Emirii,
Eleanor,
Ruth,
Tom,
So they are all the people that I see once/twice a week at Delamere/Frodsham/David Lloyd.
Now here are the groups at Delamere:
Saplings (Older group):
Nico,
Me,
Emirii,
Jacob,
Rebecca,
Ruth,
Eleanor,
Elizabeth,
Then there are the Seedlings (Younger group) but I can't remember most of their names. Robyn, Joe and Danny also to the Delamere activities, but that's on Wednesdays.
So, us 'Saplings' were split into three groups to go up 'Old Pale', answer all of the questions and return first.
The two Delamere instructors for our group; Kate and Gemma*, (*yes she has the same name as me*) switched places from last week, so we had Gemma for our Saplings group and the Seedlings had Kate.
Gemma lined us in a row from oldest to youngest and the groups were thus:
Group one (Buzzards):
Nico,
Me,
Jacob,
Group two (Penguins):
Emirii,
Rebecca,
Ruth,
Group three (... I forget)
Elizabeth,
Eleanor,
And three small boys,
So, in groups, we are given a map, a pair of binoculars, two books for answering questions, clipboard, paper, pens and a bag for putting 'Willow Grass' for lighting fires inside.
In my group, Nico got a book and the binoculars, Jacob got the other book and the map, while I got the clipboard, paper, pens and bag.
We all headed to the starting point and we declared each group's names, my group was the'Buzzards', (I suggested some stupid ones, i.e. Pidgeon as a joke, so we chose Nico's name instead) and our individual names are as follows:
Nico: Long eared Owl (Apparently this is to do with his hair?)
Jacob: Great Crested Grebe (The first unusual bird he saw in the bird book that has some perculiar similarities)
Me: Red Kite (This is a really cool bird that IS NOT a 'kite'. I chose this one by randomly opening the book on a page)
So, our 'codenames' decided we started walking up 'Old Pale'. We got all sorts of questions about birds, trees and nature at each Stage. Nico and Jacob generally answering/figuring out the questions while I wrote them down in my terrible hand writing.
Note: I did answer some questions, i.e. What's the smallest bird in the country, which was the 'Dunnock'! Yay! So yeah, I was real chuffed about that one.
At the top of Old Pale, we were asked to describe the landscape. We settled for, 'Old Pale is high, isolated and from the top there is a very 'panoramic' view'.
I just want to give Jacob a pat on the back for thinking of 'Panoramic', great word. Look it up, you'll benefit greatly from using it!
About 3/4 down Old Pale we were stumped by a tree question. There was this tree that apparently Jacob had in his back garden, luckily for us he couldn't remember what it was called. Please note sarcasm in that sentence.
We eventually put 'Common Alder' as a temporary answer, or at least, I did. ^.~
Around that point Nico saw a patch of Willow Grass! We quickly went over there and speedily filled our bag (we hadn't collected ANY until this time).
So, at the last Stage, there was this stupid question about finding evidence of certain animals by the path. Well, we found some COTTON WOOL, yes, Cotton wool! What animal has Cotton wool? Well, I put Sheep as one of the answers anyway.
Nico found an unusual animal print and some dung, the rest were human remains... Just kidding, footprints. So our answer was, humans, sheep and... cow?
So, with all our questions finished, we headed back to the main centre. Along the way, Nico and Jacob were discussing the tree they were having problems with before, and after a little more research settled on Common Alder.
I was in the middle of writing it on the clipboard when Nico noticed that I had already written it! I was rather surprised. O.O
So, I was called a 'twit' for that I suppose, but you know, in a jokey way. No offense was taken.
Back at the centre, we sat around in the nice warm room. And I watched Jacob fill a pine cone with butter and raisins, which was pretty disturbing.
Ooh, I forgot to mention, we were given two pieces of paper to write our answers on and Gemma was making a big point about that being all we had to write on. And Jacob said we actually had FOUR pieces, because we can write on both sides! So that stumped Gemma and gave the 'Buzzards' a huge advantage! ^.^
So, after all that we had lunch in the car and drove over to Frodsham, to meet everyone at the community centre.
So, we all talked for a while, and I gave Nico four DVD discs for recording an Anime on. Which I hope will be all he's cracked it up to be.
Then me, Ruth, Tamara, Jacob, Rebecca, Emirii, Joe and Danny played Capture the Flag for a while. (Super game!)
Then we all went home! The End... Well, kinda.
After all that walking my legs were aching pretty bad.
The next morning, (today) I got up and I could barely stand! I had to do my tennis lesson at David Lloyd as well!
Well, I'm OK now, just had dinner and I'm now wondering if I'll be able to manage tennis tomorrow morning...
Agh, I did some English GCSE this morning, I did one activity that said you may expect to spend THREE hours on it! And I'm only on the first lesson! I mean, come on!
I am really beginning to dislike English...
Well, that's enough for me, so I shall end with an amusing event that Nico sent me...
This actually happened.
Nico's Actual Conversation:
Dad: What were you listening to earlier?
Nico: I Don't Remember
Dad: Don't be stupid! what was it?
Nico: I Don't Remember! That's what the song is called
Dad: ...........
